“Spirit of White Wolf”
Table Top Buffalo
Sandra’s vision symbolizes people living in harmony with the natural world. With a turquoise blue sky above, gemstones sleep peacefully beneath the snow, awaiting spring. A miniature Morning Star quilt embellished with beadwork to reference gems, covers the champagne white buffalo form like snow blanketing the Black Hills. Winter themed vignettes adorn each side; one of a tipi in a snowy landscape, the other of white wolves. Traditionally, the tipi was made of buffalo hides and sometimes hunters disguised themselves with white wolf skins to approach the buffalo herd to hunt the animals
Bison and other wildlife are the main theme of Sandra’s work. From her studio in rural Chisago County; the Minnesota artist continues to follow her passion of painting animals and landscapes. This year, she includes one of her quilts in miniature as part of the artwork created for Custer Stampede 2011. The quilt is made of hand pieced buffalo hide embellished with beadwork.
She studied painting at the Collegeof Visual Arts,St. Paul, Minnesota. Her work is influenced by past artists Carl Rungius and Rosa Bohneur. She frequents the Black Hills to study and paint the wild inhabitants of the countryside seeking out places described in historical documents of the unspoiled wilderness.
Sandra has painted for the Custer Stampede Buffalo Art Auction since its beginning and is privileged to be chosen for this year’s event.
