It started as a bright sunny day in Minnesota. The sky was blue and the sun’s rays were beginning to warm the snow covered land. It was a prime day for the animals to soak up the warm sun. Instead, a stir swelled through the farm yard.
The hens heard the alert from a gold finch that saw the TV news report while perched on a window bird feeder. The sky was about to fall.
A satellite, a secret spy satellite, was leaving its orbit and falling to earth, the reporter stated. But unlike other satellites that burn up as they enter earth’s atmosphere, the spy satellite was constructed of metals and frozen fuel that would likely survive the burn and fall to earth. The poison gas would endanger any living thing that breathed the gas. It was critical for the USA space program to shoot it down over US territory before it could harm life as we know it.
The missiles, located on large destroyers in the Pacific Ocean were equipped with heat seeking capabilities that would be of little use on the cold satellite.
The Navy needed someone to guide the missile to its target.
The hens passed the information to the horses. The horses sent the alert to the dogs and one brave tiny pup placed her small paw forward to volunteer for the mission, Lucy! One small step for dogs, one huge step for saving mankind from their folly.
Time was of essence. The Ford F250 was tuned for the task. The driver seat-belted Lucy in and away they went as if they were on a moonshine run from the North Star state to the Pacific Coast.
Word got out about the secret mission and soon the truckers formed a convoy to escort the courageous pup on her journey.
News reports stated the missile successfully hit the spy satellite. No word about the tiny astronaut pup aboard the miniature space shuttle that sited in the missile.
Time rolled by and soon the whole event seemed forgotten.
Then on a sunny day as the springtime maple sap run was dripping into the buckets, Lucy trotted down the driveway. The horses, cows, chickens and even the cats leaped for joy. And of course, the American Eskimo dogs sang their best coyote howl celebrating Lucy's return.
